Counselor Education You Can Trust

Therapy Heals.
Coaching Develops.
You Can Do Both —
With Excellence.
While you were mastering clinical mental health treatment, the world changed. This is the era of Mel Robbins.Â
Today's clients don’t always need behavioral healthcare, and they don't want to dissect their childhood—they want to build their future. Unqualified "life coaches" are filling this gap, taking your ideal clients with them.
Your years of clinical education prepared you brilliantly for treating pathology. But today's marketplace is filled with non-clinical clients seeking growth, not treatment. They're flocking to coaches with fraction of your expertise because these coaches offer something you weren't trained to provide: structured pathways to achievement.
The irony? You're better positioned to deliver this than any coach—if you add evidence-based coaching psychology to your toolkit.
The modern mental health landscape rewards professionals who bridge the gap—clinically trained therapists who've mastered evidence-based coaching psychology. These unicorns aren't abandoning their therapeutic roots; they're extending their branches.
The unicorns—therapists who master both realms—are winning. They're not just treating mental health; they're transforming lives, growing their practices, and creating massive impact.
The gap is real. The opportunity is clear. The question is: Will you be the therapist who evolves, or the one who gets left behind?

Therapy Heals. Coaching Develops.

Â
While you were mastering clinical mental health treatment, the world changed. This is the era of Mel Robbins.
Today's clients, the growth oriented, motivated ones you love working with the most, don’t always need behavioral healthcare. They also don't want to dissect their childhood—they want to build their future. They're looking for coaching, not insight oriented talk therapy.
And they are right. Evidence-based coaching psychology is a legitimate, respected modality for creating change—one that’s often more effective than therapy for non-clinical clients.
But therapists aren't trained in this modality. That's a problem.
Because, right now, unqualified "life coaches" are filling this gap, taking your ideal clients with them.
The irony? You're better positioned to deliver deep transformation than any coach—if you add evidence-based coaching psychology to your toolkit.
It’s time for therapists to step into coaching the way we step into everything else: with integrity, expertise, and a commitment to doing it right.
That’s why Growing Self’s Coaching Certification for Therapists is the gold standard. This program doesn’t just give you a credential that protects you from liability—it gives you the real-world experience, ethical foundations, self-of-therapist identity development, and practical coaching skills to do excellent work with clients, evolve professionally, and build a thriving practice.
Clinically trained therapists who become certified in evidence-based coaching psychology are set up for success in this new reality. They're not just treating mental health; they're transforming lives, growing their practices, and creating massive impact. All while breaking free of the medical model.
The gap is real. Growth oriented clients want and need your expertise. They are looking for you. Are you ready for them? The opportunity is clear. The question is: Will you be the therapist who evolves, or the one who gets left behind?
Becoming a Board Certified Coach gives you the competence and the confidence to step into this gap, differentiate your practice, and be the powerful "change agent" your ideal clients need and deserve.
So glad you're here,Â
LisaÂ

Advance Your ExpertiseÂ
with a Structured, Evidence-Based Approach
The Growing Self Coaching Certification Program is uniquely designed for licensed therapists who want to integrate coaching psychology into their professional practice. Unlike general coaching programs, which cater to the public, this certification is built on a foundation of evidence-based methodologies tailored for clinicians.
This program doesn’t just provide theoretical knowledge—it immerses you in the coaching process, allowing you to experience firsthand the effectiveness of structured, research-backed coaching techniques. Through this approach, you will refine your skills, expand your professional scope, and be equipped to apply the same transformative strategies with your clients.
You'll be more effective.
Some non-clinical clients benefit from self directed, insight oriented talk therapy... many don't. They want to learn, grow, and create different outcomes. Coaching empowers this process for them more directly and effectively than therapy.
You'll be more attractive.
What sets you apart? We are in a competitive industry, and with AI based "therapy" alternatives and a saturated market, it's vital to carve out a professional niche that people are looking for. Great clients are looking for therapists who coach!
You'll be more successful.
If you're tethered to the medical model, billing insurance, working with high need clients, or toiling away trying to grow a self-pay solo private practice (with crickets chirping), coaching removes obstacles, and allows success to flow.
You'll be happier.
Some clinicians love working with a full caseload of very high need clients... but most don't. They love working with motivated clients who are ready to learn, grow, and do the work. Those clients don't need psychotherapy. They benefit from coaching. You benefit by doing more of the work you love.
You'll be healthier.
We’ve all been there—worrying about clients, drowning in paperwork, and hustling just to make it work with in-network rates. Incorporating coaching changes everything. It brings in self-pay clients, balances your caseload, and helps you create the work/life balance you deserve.
You'll be wealthier.
Top life coaches charge $150-$500 per hour. Most therapists earn between $75-$150 per hour (much lower, if you're spending hours on insurance claims to get paid). Coaching not only offers higher rates but also attracts self-pay clients, giving you more financial prosperity.

Are You Eligible to Enroll?
Our Growing Self Coaching Certification for Therapists is an advanced training program tailored for licensed mental health professionals seeking to become Board Certified Coaches (BCC). This program builds on the expertise, qualifications, and clinical experience that licensed professionals like you already possess, which is why it’s designed to be a 30-hour course that awards credits for your education and experience. (Instead of a 60-hour course).
However, due to the specialized nature of this program, there are strict eligibility requirements. To ensure this program is the right fit for you, please carefully review the following criteria:
Who Is Eligible to Enroll?
You must meet one of the following educational and professional qualifications:
- National Certified Counselor (NCC) or fully state-licensed mental health professional (e.g., LPC, LPCC, LMHC, LMFT, LP, LCSW).
- Master’s degree or higher in counseling or counseling psychology (please see important details below for related Master's degrees that do NOT meet eligibility criteria).
- Doctoral degree in a related social or behavioral science field, such as:
- Marriage and Family Therapy (DMFT)
- Social Work (DSW)
- Psychology (PsyD or PhD)
- View the credentialing requirements for the BCC here: https://www.cce-global.org/credentialing/bcc/requirements
Who This Program is Not For:
This program was created specifically for fully licensed, advanced mental health professionals. If you do not meet the following requirements, this is not the right program for you:
- Not fully licensed: If you hold a master’s degree in a related field such as social work, education, or marriage and family therapy but are not fully licensed as a professional counselor and/or do not hold NCC status, you will need to complete a 60-hour coaching certification program from a CCE-accredited provider.
- Bachelor’s degree only: If your highest degree is a bachelor’s degree in psychology or any other field, you are required to complete a 120-hour coaching program to qualify for the BCC credential.
- No college degree: Unfortunately, if you do not have at least a bachelor’s degree, you are not eligible to pursue the BCC credential.
View the credentialing requirements for the BCC here: https://www.cce-global.org/credentialing/bcc/requirements
Why Eligibility Matters
This 30-hour coaching certification program was designed specifically to meet the educational requirements for mental health professionals to become board-certified through the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE). It leverages the clinical training and qualifications you’ve already earned, making it an ideal next step for those already established in the field.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify or have questions about your eligibility, feel free to reach out to us for guidance. We want to ensure you’re in the right program for your career goals.
A Program That Maximizes Your Investment
By meeting the eligibility requirements, you’ll gain access to a program that aligns with your existing professional experience while also counting towards continuing education hours—ensuring every hour you invest in this course works toward both your therapy license and your coaching certification.
If you meet the criteria, this program is the perfect way to build on your strengths, deepen your expertise, and step confidently into a new chapter as a Board Certified Coach.
Is This The Right Program For You?
If you’re a licensed therapist ready to step into the work you actually want to do — the kind that energizes you and brings out your best — then this program is for you.
It’s for therapists craving a stronger, more balanced practice with non-clinical, full-fee clients who are eager to grow, evolve, and create real change. This program will give you the tools to move clients forward, using evidence-based theories you already know but applied in a new, action-oriented framework.
If you're tired of being boxed into a medical model that forces diagnoses when all you really want is to help people grow, this program is your way out.
It’s not for the faint of heart, though. You’ll need to commit at least 30 hours to this work, and you’ll be challenged to think differently about how you help clients move forward. Coaching is not therapy. To be an effective coach you'll need to learn new skills, new frameworks, and a completely different mindset about your role, your purpose, and the process of change. But isn’t that what growth is all about?
If you’re ready to take your practice — and yourself — to the next level, enroll today. The transformation starts here.
Why Therapists Need Formal Coaching Certification
Here’s the truth: Coaching is the Wild West. No regulations, no gatekeepers—anyone with a website can call themselves a coach. And many do. As a therapist, you could easily join the fray and offer coaching without formal training or credentials. But deep down, you know better. The stakes are too high for you—and your clients.
"DIY Coaching" — especially for therapists — is really dangerous.
Here’s why: offering coaching without proper training means you’re operating outside your scope of competence. That’s a major liability. Missteps in areas like dual relationships, confidentiality, or failing to recognize when a client actually needs therapy can open you up to grievances or even complaints to your licensing board. When you’re not trained in the nuances of coaching, you’re not just taking risks—you’re putting your practice and professional integrity on the line.
Why Invest in Certification?
The BCC (Board Certified Coach) credential isn’t just about checking a box. It’s about mastering a whole new skill set. Coaching isn’t “therapy without a diagnosis”—it’s a distinct process focused on action, accountability, and measurable outcomes. Without training, you risk frustrating your clients and losing them when they don’t get the results they’re seeking.
With the BCC credential, you’ll gain the knowledge and tools to confidently step into the coaching role. It’s awarded by the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE), the same organization that oversees counselor certifications and CE programs. This credential gives you credibility, protects your license, and ensures you’re delivering coaching services that meet the highest ethical and professional standards.
Set Yourself Apart
Right now, anyone can call themselves a coach, but not everyone can call themselves you: a highly trained therapist who’s also a certified coach. Clients will see the difference, and they’ll trust you to help them achieve real growth and transformation. The BCC credential positions you as the go-to professional in a crowded market, offering a combination of depth and results that no DIY coach can match.
If you’re going to coach, do it the right way. Protect your practice, elevate your skills, and deliver the kind of transformative work your clients are seeking. This is your opportunity to lead with confidence and integrity.

Why Therapists Choose The BCC Credential Over The ICF?
When you step into coaching, you want to do it right—because that’s the kind of professional you are. The Board Certified Coach (BCC) credential, awarded by the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE)—a division of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)—is designed specifically for licensed therapists like you who are ready to bring the same professionalism, ethics, and excellence from therapy into the world of coaching.
The CCE also oversees certifications like the National Certified Counselor (NCC) and others in clinical supervision and mental health counseling. The BCC certification aligns with the same professional rigor, ethical standards, and trust you’ve relied on throughout your clinical career as a therapist.
The ICF Is For Laypeople, Not Therapists
Sadly, (and concerningly) most people who call themselves coaches don’t even pursue formal training. And those who do typically go through programs that are either unaccredited (just like anyone can coach, also literally anyone can offer a "coaching certification") or designed to obtain the International Coaching Federation (ICF) coaching credential.
Why? It's because anyone can enroll in an unaccredited coaching program, or obtain an ICF credential. And the ICF credential is not designed specifically for therapists.
ICF certifications are fine for lay people who don't have mental health licenses on the line, and who don't have other options for accredited coaching certifications. But pursuing an ICF credential is the wrong choice for therapists, for several reasons.
Legal and Ethical Safeguards For Therapists
ICF programs won’t cover the specific ethical and legal responsibilities you have as a therapist. Without proper boundaries between therapy and coaching, you could unintentionally blur the lines, creating liability risks or even violating ethical standards. Handling dual relationships, maintaining client confidentiality, and knowing when to refer a client to therapy are critical aspects that ICF programs simply don’t address. The BCC, on the other hand, is built to align with the ethical standards you already follow, so you can coach confidently, knowing your work is both effective and legally sound.
The BCC code of ethics is for therapists. The ICF code of ethics is not. If you follow all the rules and ethical guidelines as per the ICF... it could get you into hot water as a therapist who coaches.
Training That Honors Your Expertise
Â
The BCC program knows you’re not starting from scratch. It’s designed to build on your strengths with just 30 hours of coach-specific training, rather than the 60 or 120 hours required for laypeople.
This is more than just a credential. It’s about teaching you how to use what you know from being a therapist, but also develop an entirely new set of competencies in order to deliver coaching that works, build a thriving private practice, and avoid the pitfalls that come with not understanding the nuances of coaching versus therapy.
You’ll learn how to be the coach that your clients want, need, and expect, lead their change process, challenge them, hold them accountable, and create real outcomes—all while protecting your license and professional integrity.
 Â
Choosing the BCC credential means choosing the path of professionalism, growth, and excellence. You’re here because you care about doing things the right way, even when it’s not required. That’s who you are. And with the BCC credential, you’ll have the skills, confidence, and structure to coach with integrity—and build the practice and career you’ve always wanted.

Questions to Ask Before Enrolling in a Coaching Program
Questions to Ask Before Enrolling in a Coaching Certification Program
Choosing the right coaching certification program is a significant decision. The coaching industry is filled with both legitimate programs and ones that, frankly, aren’t worth your time or investment. As a licensed therapist, you can’t afford to take chances on the wrong program. Your reputation, ethical standards, and future success as a coach depend on selecting a program that’s aligned with your professional needs and long-term goals. Below are some key questions to ask before enrolling in a coaching certification program to help you evaluate whether it’s the right fit for you.
1. Was This Program Designed for Therapists?
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is enrolling in a coaching program that isn’t built specifically for licensed mental health professionals. As a therapist, you’re required to uphold strict ethical standards that include confidentiality, dual relationships, mandatory reporting requirements, and clinical boundaries. These aren’t just “suggestions” in our field—they’re legal and ethical requirements.
Programs designed for layperson coaches won’t provide you with the nuance you need to coach effectively and ethically while navigating the complexities of your dual role as both a therapist and a coach. If you rely on general coaching guidelines that aren’t aligned with your legal and ethical obligations, you could risk liability issues—or worse, jeopardize your license. That’s why it’s essential to ask:
- Does this program address the ethical responsibilities specific to therapists who coach?
- Does it help you learn how to assess when coaching is appropriate, and when a client needs therapy?
Our program was developed by therapists, for therapists. It aligns with the professional standards you already follow in your clinical practice, so you can confidently coach without crossing boundaries that could compromise your work as a therapist.
2. Is This Program Accredited by the CCE?
The coaching education industry, much like coaching itself, is completely unregulated. This means anyone can put together a “certification” program, throw up a website, and start enrolling students—whether or not they have any legitimate qualifications. As a licensed therapist, you know better than to take shortcuts with your education. That’s why it’s crucial to look for a program that is accredited by a respected credentialing body.
The Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE)—an extension of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)—is one of the most reputable organizations in this space. Their Board Certified Coach (BCC) credential was created with licensed mental health professionals in mind, recognizing the expertise you already have while ensuring you learn the practical coaching skills and frameworks you need to be effective.
If a program isn’t accredited by the CCE, it might not meet the educational requirements for the BCC credential—and you’ll miss out on the opportunity to earn a credential that carries weight in both the mental health and coaching worlds. Ask yourself:
- Is this program accredited by the CCE or another reputable credentialing body?
- Will this program meet the requirements for the BCC credential?
- Am I confident that this program is worth my time, money, and energy?
3. What is the Return on Investment (ROI)?
Getting certified as a coach is an investment—of both time and money—so it’s important to think about the return you’ll get from it. While some coaching certifications can cost thousands of dollars, not all of them deliver the value you need to succeed. Here are some key considerations:
- Will this program equip you with the skills to attract and retain high-quality, full-fee clients?
- How soon will you be able to recoup your investment by bringing in coaching clients?
For example, with our Expert Experience level, just ten sessions with three private-pay coaching clients will cover the cost of the program. And because the skills you’ll gain are designed to enhance your private practice and help you work with motivated, growth-oriented clients, you’ll likely see a rapid return on your investment.
4. Does the Program Fit Your Learning Style and Goals?
Not all programs are created equal—and the one that’s right for someone else might not be right for you. It’s essential to choose a program that aligns with both your learning style and your long-term goals. Do you prefer self-paced learning or thrive in a structured, group environment? Are you looking for real-world coaching experience or simply need to meet credentialing requirements?
Our program offers three different levels to meet your unique needs:
- The Coaching Academy: Perfect for self-directed learners who want to go at their own pace.
- The Professional Collective: Ideal if you want community, structure, and accountability through live classes.
- The Expert Experience: The best choice if your goal is to quickly build a successful coaching practice and gain real-world coaching experience.
By choosing the right level for your needs, you can ensure that the time and money you invest in your education will deliver the outcomes you’re hoping for—both for your clients and your career.
5. Will This Program Set You Up for Long-Term Success?
Coaching isn’t just about adding another skill to your toolbox—it’s about building a sustainable and successful practice. That means having the right tools, frameworks, and professional network to support your growth over the long haul.
With the BCC credential, you’ll not only meet the highest standards in the industry—you’ll also join a community of like-minded professionals dedicated to excellence in both coaching and mental health. This isn’t just a short-term investment; it’s a long-term strategy for growing your career, attracting the clients you want to work with, and doing the kind of work you love.
The Bottom Line
Choosing a coaching certification program is about more than just meeting credentialing requirements—it’s about making a smart investment in your future. As a therapist, you have unique professional needs and ethical responsibilities that not every coaching program will address. Be sure to choose a program designed specifically for therapists, accredited by a reputable organization like the CCE, and aligned with your professional values and goals.
When you enroll in the right program, you’ll be set up for success—equipped to confidently lead your clients, build a thriving private practice, and become the kind of coach who makes a meaningful impact.

What Every Therapist Should Know About Evidence-Based Coaching Psychology
What Every Therapist Should Know About Evidence-Based Coaching Psychology
Coaching psychology offers a powerful new way to help clients grow, thrive, and achieve outcomes that traditional therapy isn't designed to address. While coaching shares roots with the same evidence-based theories of change we learn in counseling programs—like cognitive-behavioral theory, positive psychology, and solution-focused frameworks—it applies these principles in a different way and with a different goal. Coaching is not about treating mental health conditions; it’s about helping people identify where they want to go and providing the structure, accountability, and support they need to get there.
A Different Purpose with a Different Process
Therapy and coaching are not interchangeable. Therapy focuses on diagnosis, symptom reduction, and recovery from mental health challenges. Coaching, on the other hand, is about personal development, goal-setting, and achieving specific outcomes—whether that’s improving relationships, excelling in a career, or increasing life satisfaction.
Here’s the key difference: While therapy focuses on insight and emotional healing, coaching focuses on action and transformation. Coaching isn’t a watered-down version of therapy—it’s a different process entirely, with a distinct structure, goals, and approach.
As a therapist, transitioning into coaching requires understanding how to apply evidence-based theories in ways that serve the coaching process. Simply doing “therapy without a diagnosis” isn’t coaching—and without proper training, you risk getting stuck in therapy mode with coaching clients. The result? Clients will get frustrated because they aren’t getting the outcomes they expected—and they’ll vote with their feet by going elsewhere.
The Research Foundation of Coaching Psychology
Coaching psychology is built on the same research-based models that form the foundation of therapeutic practice—models like behavioral psychology, systems theory, cognitive frameworks, and humanistic approaches. However, coaching draws on these to help clients set goals, develop strategies, and stay accountable to their progress.
In recent years, coaching psychology has grown into a recognized field of its own, with dedicated journals and thought leaders producing cutting-edge research and best practices. If you’re serious about incorporating coaching into your practice, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the leading publications in the field, including:
- The International Journal of Coaching Psychology
- The International Coaching Psychology Review
- Coaching: An International Journal of Theory, Research, and Practice
These journals offer peer-reviewed research, theoretical insights, and case studies that can help you stay informed about the latest developments in coaching psychology.
Why Evidence-Based Coaching Matters for Therapists
As a licensed therapist, you already have the foundational knowledge required to understand and apply the theories that support both therapy and coaching. But knowing the theory isn’t enough. You need to learn how to apply these models effectively in a coaching context, where the focus is on creating change, not treating symptoms.
When you practice coaching without a deep understanding of the process and purpose behind it, you risk doing a disservice to your clients—and possibly even violating ethical boundaries if you blur the lines between therapy and coaching. Proper training in coaching psychology helps you:
- Assess whether a client is appropriate for coaching
- Establish clear roles and boundaries between therapy and coaching
- Utilize coaching tools and frameworks to drive meaningful, goal-directed change
- Avoid liability risks by operating within the ethical guidelines required for therapists
The Value of Becoming an Evidence-Based Coach
Choosing to become a board-certified coach isn’t just about adding another credential to your resume. It’s about becoming the kind of professional who understands both the art and science of change. With evidence-based coaching techniques, you’ll be able to:
- Work with high-functioning, goal-oriented clients who aren’t a fit for therapy but need guidance
- Offer new services in your private practice that align with client needs and market demand
- Integrate coaching techniques into your therapy practice to create new opportunities for growth
- Confidently navigate the overlap between therapy and coaching without compromising your license or ethics
Your Next Step: Embrace the Power of Coaching Psychology
If you’re ready to step into coaching and build a thriving practice that goes beyond therapy, it’s time to dive into the world of evidence-based coaching psychology. By becoming familiar with the theories, practices, and research that guide this field—and by choosing the right credentialing program designed for therapists—you’ll position yourself to deliver the kind of transformational work that today’s clients expect.

What Level Should You Enroll In?
What Level Should You Enroll In?
You’ve made it this far for a reason. You’re ready to step into coaching, build something that matters, and start working with the kinds of clients you really want to serve. But here’s the thing: how you approach this next step matters.
It’s not just about adding a new skill to your toolkit—it’s about building a practice that works for you and delivers real results for your clients. Whether you need flexibility, structure, accountability, or hands-on experience, the right level of this program will make all the difference in your success. Let’s break it down.
The Coaching AcademyÂ
This is for the self-starters. You want the tools, the knowledge, and the credentials, but you’re good at learning on your own. The Coaching Academy gives you everything you need—completely self-paced—so you can build the foundation without any extra commitments.
- Time Commitment: 30 hours at your pace (spread out however you like).
- Our Most Affordable Path to Certification
This Level Is for You If...
- You’re independent and love working at your own pace.
- You need flexibility to fit the learning into your schedule.
- You want 30 CE hours toward your license renewal.
- You need a lower cost option.
The Challenge: You’re on your own to stay motivated and make it happen. No live feedback, no weekly check-ins. It’s all on you.
The Professional CollectiveÂ
This level is for the learners who thrive with accountability. It’s everything from the Coaching Academy plus 8 live weekly classes and a study group —giving you the chance to connect with other therapists, get real-time feedback, and stay on track.
- Time Commitment: 8 weeks of live, 60-minute classes + self-paced work, and access to 8 weeks of our BCC exam study group.
This Level Is for You If...
- You value structure and accountability to keep you moving forward.
- You love collaboration and want to learn alongside others.
- You want feedback and insight from live coaching calls with me.
- You need 40 CE hours for license renewal.
The Challenge: You’ll need to show up for live classes every week and stay committed to the assignments. It's a larger investment of time. But if accountability is what you need, and you value a deeper learning experience than what a self-study course can provide, this will be the game-changer.
The Expert Experience
If you’re serious about becoming a truly excellent coach and building a private practice fast, this is the one for you. The Expert Experience is the ultimate level—combining everything from the Professional Collective with real-world coaching experience and 1:1 mentorship.
- Time Commitment: 8 weeks of live classes + 8 additional weeks of consultation and coaching groups, real-world coaching, and access to 1:1 mentorship.
- If you're serious about fast-tracking your success and attaining real results in your private practice, this level is the best investment. Not only will you become a board certified coach, you'll gain paying clients for your practice — meaning that this level pays for itself.
Why this is the best value: The experience you get through this level will set you up for success, and pay for itself. Consider that if you carry over three of your internship clients into your private practice at full fee, and work with each of them for 10 sessions, it will cover the entire cost of the program.
Participating at this level will provide you with confidence, competence, actual coaching clients, and a leg up to the private practice success you want and deserve.
This Level Is for You If...
- You want to hit the ground running and attract coaching clients fast.
- You want hands-on mentorship and real-world experience.
- You want the confidence that comes from practicing coaching in real time.
- You’re ready to build a thriving private practice—and get paid.
- You need 50 CE hours toward your license renewal.
The Challenge: This takes serious commitment. Our internship is immersive and requires involvement in consultation groups, mentorship, and time spent coaching clients. But the payoff? A fast track to genuine expertise and private practice success.
How to Choose the Right Level
-
Need Flexibility?
- Coaching Academy is perfect if you want to move at your own pace.
-
Crave Accountability?
- The Professional Collective will keep you motivated with live classes and a supportive network.

What is The Process For Becoming a Board Certified Coach?
Â
If you’re a licensed mental health professional or hold a graduate degree in counseling or behavioral sciences, becoming a Board Certified Coach (BCC) is a smart step toward expanding your skills and professional opportunities. The BCC credential, awarded by the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE), ensures you meet a high standard of excellence in coaching and prepares you to deliver effective, ethical coaching services.
The process of becoming a Board Certified Coach involves a series of important steps to verify your qualifications, gain practical coaching experience, and demonstrate your competence through training and examination. Below, we walk you through the complete BCC certification process based on the CCE’s official guidelines.
Step 1: Complete a CCE-Accredited Coach Training Program
To become a Board Certified Coach, you must complete a CCE-approved 30-hour coach training program. This program lays the foundation of your coaching knowledge and ensures you are equipped to coach effectively and ethically.
If you are:
- A National Certified Counselor (NCC)
- A state-licensed mental health provider (e.g., LPC, LMFT, LMHC)
- Someone with a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling or psychology
- A professional with a doctoral degree in social or behavioral science (e.g., social work, marriage and family therapy)
Then a 30-hour CCE-accredited coach training program—such as the one offered by Growing Self Counseling & Coaching—fulfills the educational requirements needed to apply for the BCC credential.
NOTE: The Growing Self Coaching Certification is designed for advanced mental health professionals, and awards credit for your existing education and qualifications. If you do not meet the above prerequisite criteria, this program will not meet your educational requirements to become a board-certified coach.
In the absence of state licensure, NCC status, a graduate degree in counseling, or a doctorate in a related field, the CCE requires you to complete a 60 or 120-hour coach training program to obtain the BCC credential.Â
Step 2: Complete the BCC Application Process with the CCE
After completing your coach training, you will need to finish the rest of the application process with the CCE. This includes the following steps:
-
Submit Proof of Your Educational Credentials or Licensure
- You will need to provide official transcripts of your academic qualifications or documentation proving your state licensure is in good standing.
- If you are an NCC, you will submit verification of your current status through the application process.
-
Complete 30 Hours of Post-Degree Coaching Experience
- After your training, you must gain 30 hours of real-world coaching experience. This is essential for building competence as a coach.
- These hours must be documented using an experience form signed by a mentor, supervisor, or colleague familiar with your coaching work.
-
Obtain a Professional Endorsement
- You will need a professional reference to vouch for your readiness and competence as a coach. This endorsement serves as an additional layer of accountability, ensuring your credibility in the field.
-
Pass the BCC Exam
- Once your application materials are complete, you must successfully pass the Board Certified Coach exam. This rigorous exam assesses your understanding of core coaching competencies and ensures you are well-prepared to practice at a high level.
-
Pay the Application Fee
- The application process requires the payment of a certification fee. Visit the CCE’s official website for the most up-to-date information about costs associated with the BCC credential.
Step 3: Maintain Your BCC Credential Through Recertification
Once you become a Board Certified Coach, you will need to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development through regular recertification.
- Recertification Cycle: Every five years, you will need to complete 70 clock hours of continuing education.
- Ethics Requirement: Of the 70 hours, 4 clock hours must focus on ethics to ensure you stay aligned with best practices.
- Competency Areas: The remaining 66 clock hours must cover at least one of the six BCC core competency areas.
By staying current on coaching trends and developments, you’ll ensure your practice continues to meet high professional standards and provide exceptional value to your clients.
Educational Requirements for the BCC Credential
The educational requirements for the BCC credential are strict to ensure the highest level of professional competence. Your degree must be from a post-secondary educational institution accredited by a recognized state agency or approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
This ensures that the BCC credential is grounded in rigorous academic standards and is reserved for those with a substantial educational foundation in counseling, psychology, or behavioral science.
Ready to Start Your BCC Journey?
If you’re ready to become a Board Certified Coach, Growing Self’s CCE-accredited 30-hour coach training program is the perfect place to begin. Not only will you fulfill the educational requirements for the BCC credential, but you’ll also gain the confidence, skills, and tools needed to thrive as an ethical, effective coach.

The Best Investment You'll
Ever Make? It's YOU.
Warren Buffet once said, “By far, the best investment you can make is in yourself.” And let me tell you, that quote has been my guiding light every time I’ve found myself exactly where you are right now—hovering over the “enroll” button, wondering, “Is this the right move? Will this really be worth it?”
I’ve been there, many times, because I am a lifelong learner who invests in myself. Just like you, I’ve poured my time, energy, and money into learning, growing, and becoming the best helper I can be.
And here’s what I’ve discovered: every time I’ve invested in my own growth—my knowledge, confidence, and skills—it has paid off.
Not only financially (although it absolutely has, many, many times over) but in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
Those investments set me on an upward spiral, unlocking opportunities and outcomes I never thought possible—until I took that first step forward.
And here’s the magic: when you invest in yourself, no one can take that away from you.
It changes you at your core, becoming part of who you are and how you show up for yourself, your clients, and your future.
Now, I’m here to share everything I’ve learned with you. I’ve done the work, walked this path, and guided so many therapists through this same transformation. And now, it’s your turn.
This program is more than just a course—it’s a powerful growth opportunity designed to help you step into the next, best version of yourself.
It’s your chance to invest in your future, build the career you’ve always wanted, and create the outcomes you—and your clients—deserve.
I believe with all my heart that investing in yourself is the most valuable thing you can do, both for yourself, and for the people who depend on you.
The world needs you to grow and evolve, and invest in becoming the fullest, best, and brightest version of yourself.
And I’ll be with you every step of the way.
So, are you ready to take that step, invest in yourself, and launch the next chapter of love, happiness, and success?
Let’s do this—together.

Feeling Burned Out, Underpaid, & Undervalued?
Here's How Therapists Are Reclaiming Their Worth...
Â
You became a therapist because you care deeply about helping people. But let's get real: It doesn't feel like the system cares much about you, does it?
You’re spending unpaid hours fighting with insurance companies to get reimbursed at insulting in-network rates. You’re trying to make ends meet while balancing an overwhelming caseload... or feeling the stress and anxiety of the opposite problem: a wide open schedule with few prospective clients and student loan bills to pay.Â
Meanwhile, “life coaches” with a fraction of your training (if that) are landing amazing, motivated, self-pay clients—the ones you dream of working with—and charging double your rates.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
The truth is, that the system set you up to fail in this new era.
Therapy school taught you how to diagnose and treat mental health issues, but it didn’t prepare you for the new reality of our profession. It didn’t teach you how to thrive in private practice, especially in a world where clients aren't looking for "treatment" — they want a growth partner who can help them attain their goals, and learn how to get better outcomes.
Your ideal clients don’t want or need “behavioral healthcare.” They want to work with Mel Robbins! They want someone who can help them get tangible results, and they’re willing to pay for it.Â
It’s time for you to level up your skill-set, become competitive in this new era, and claim the success you deserve.
By becoming a "unicorn"—a licensed therapist and a highly effective Board Certified Coach—you can rewrite the script. You’ll gain the tools to attract the clients you really want, confidently guide them toward their goals, and finally earn what you’re worth.
With your foundation in mental health and a true mastery of coaching, you’ll bridge the gap between therapy and coaching, offering services that meet the demands of today’s clients. No more lowball insurance rates and unpaid admin hours. No more struggles to communicate your value. Just meaningful work that brings satisfaction and security to you, as well as your clients.
The system may have set you up to fail, but you don’t have to stay stuck. This is your chance to step into a new chapter of financial stability, professional fulfillment, and personal freedom.
The path is here. Let’s take it together.
